Evaluation of Lumbar Vertebral Body and Disc: A Stereological Morphometric Study International Journal of Morphology
Gocmen-Mas,Nuket; Karabekir,Hamit; Ertekin,Tolga; Edizer,Mete; Canan,Yazici; Duyar,Izzet.
Anterior access to the L1-L5 vertebrae and disc spaces can be technically challenging, frequently requiring the use of an approach to a surgeon for an adequate exposure. The technique is used for lesion excision, corpectomy, vertebral body reconstruction with cages, realignment, and/or plating or screwing. For a successful anterior approach and a suitable instrumental design via screw, adequate morphometric knowledge about body of lumbar vertebrae and disc spaces and standardized volumetric data are also required for neurosurgeons. We aimed morphometric and volumetric evaluation of lumbar bodies and discs to contribute to a safe anterior approach during surgery. We evaluated vertebral body and disc morphometry using stereology in right-handed 25 adult...

Experimental chronic entrapment of the sciatic nerve in adult hamsters: an ultrastructural and morphometric study BJMBR
Prinz,R.A.D.; Nakamura-Pereira,M.; De-Ary-Pires,B.; Fernandes,D.S.; Fabião-Gomes,B.D.S.V.; Bunn,P.S.; Martinez,A.M.B.; Pires-Neto,M.A.; Ary-Pires,R..
Entrapment neuropathy is a group of clinical disorders involving compression of a peripheral nerve and interference with nerve function mostly through traction injury. We have investigated the chronic compression of peripheral nerves as an experimental procedure for detecting changes in ultrastructural nerve morphology. Adult hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus, N = 30) were anesthetized with a 25% pentobarbital solution and received a cuff around the right sciatic nerve. Left sciatic nerves were not operated (control group). Animals survived for varying times (up to 15 weeks), after which they were sacrificed and both sciatic nerves were immediately fixed with a paraformaldehyde solution. Experimental nerves were divided into segments based upon their distance...

First larval description and chaetotaxic analysis of the neotropical whirligig beetle genus Enhydrus Laporte (Coleoptera, Gyrinidae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Michat,Mariano C.; Alvarenga,Thiago Marinho; Silva,Marconi Souza; Alarie,Yves.
ABSTRACT The larva of the whirligig beetle Enhydrus sulcatus (Wiedemann, 1821) is described and illustrated for the first time, including detailed morphometric and chaetotaxic analyses of the cephalic capsule, head appendages and legs. Larvae of Enhydrus Laporte, 1834 exhibit the characters traditionally recognized as autapomorphies of the family Gyrinidae: well developed cardo, completely divided prementum, presence of lateral abdominal tracheal gills, and presence of four terminal hooks on the pygopod. The egg bursters located on the parietal, the presence of an additional sensorial plate on the third antennomere, and a well developed lacinia may also represent autapomorphies of the family. Enhydrus larvae share with those of the other known Dineutini...

Gender on the growth of Criollo foals from birth to three years of age Ciência Rural
Pimentel,Anelise Maria Hammes; Rodrigues,Walvonvitis Baes; Martins,Charles Ferreira; Montanez,Nathanael Ramos; Boligon,Arione Augusti; Souza,João Ricardo Malheiros de.
ABSTRACT: The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of gender on the growth of Criollo foals, in order to use this information as a reference for breeding as well as in future research. Body height, thoracic perimeter, and cannon bone perimeter of 75 foals were measured from two farms in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (Lat. 32°, 33′, 58″, Long. 53°, 22′, 33″) and from three generations over three years. In both farms, animals were kept under the same range and feeding conditions. Nonlinear regression models were applied to describe the growth curves for the three traits over the experimental period. Cannon bone perimeter was greater in males than in females (P<0.001) but the predicted curves for body height and thoracic perimeter did not...

Gender-related diet composition and morphometry of the Restinga Antwren, Formicivora littoralis (Aves: Thamnophilidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Chaves,Flávia G.; Alves,Maria Alice S..
Formicivora littoralis (Gonzaga and Pacheco, 1990), the Restinga Antwren, considered the only endemic bird species of the Restinga ecosystem (sandy plain coastal vegetation), is threatened with extinction. The scientific literature provides little information on the biology of this bird, which was discovered in 1990. We evaluate gender-related differences in the composition of the diet and morphometric measurements of this species. We tested the hypothesis that the sexes differ in what they eat and in morphometric characters. Our results revealed that the diet of the Restinga Antwren includes mainly arthropods, which is consistent with the diets of other Thamnophilidae. The lack of differences in the composition of the diet between the sexes does not...

Genetic and morphometric differences between yellowtail snapper (Ocyurus chrysurus, Lutjanidae) populations of the tropical West Atlantic Genet. Mol. Biol.
Vasconcellos,Anderson V.; Vianna,Paulo; Paiva,Paulo C.; Schama,Renata; Solé-Cava,Antonio.
Populations of Ocyurus chrysurus were compared genetically and morphometrically along the West Atlantic coast to test the null hypothesis of population homogeneity in the area. Brazilian populations were found to be differentiated in shape (canonical variates analysis; F[48,515] = 10.84, p < 0.0001). Analyses of mitochondrial DNA sequences (663 bp of the control region) did not show any differences between Brazilian populations but could detect differences between Brazilian and Caribbean (Belize) populations. The samples from Pernambuco differed significantly from the other Brazilian populations in allozyme frequencies (11 loci; F ST = 0.167; p < 0.05), but this may have resulted from the small number of samples analysed for that population. Sequence...

Genetic parameters of in-vivo prediction of carcass, head and fillet yields by internal ultrasound and 2D external imagery in large rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) ArchiMer
Haffray, Pierrick; Bugeon, Jerome; Rivard, Quentin; Quittet, Benjamin; Puyo, Sophie; Allamelou, Jean Michel; Vandeputte, Marc; Dupont-nivet, Mathilde.
Selection to improve processing yields relies on sib selection, in which live candidates are ranked according to their family breeding value. This approach limits genetic progress, as it only exploits genetic variability between families and not within them. Indirect criteria measured on live candidates could overcome this limitation. The present study (1) proposes a procedure to identify indirect criteria to predict processing yields in rainbow trout (head, carcass and fillet yields), (2) estimates genetic parameters of these indirect criteria, and (3) predicts relative genetic gains in processing yields using full-sib selection or indirect individual selection on those indirect criteria. DNA-pedigreed all-female rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (n =...

Geographic distribution and morphological variation in Mimon bennettii (Chiroptera, Phyllostomidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Gregorin,Renato; Capusso,Guilherme L.; Furtado,Vanessa R..
We studied discrete and quantitative data from 88 specimens of the subgenus Mimon previously identified as Mimon bennettii (Gray, 1838) and M. cozumelae Goldman, 1914 from diverse parts of their range. Our data indicate that specimens of Mimon bennetii in Brazil presented geographic variation in morphometrical characters and mosaic variation in qualitative traits. Specimens from the Cerrado biome collected in Brazilian states like Piaui, Tocantins, and Goiás have longer forearms than those distributed in the Atlantic and Amazon forested domains. Based on morphometrics, as showed by t-tests, specimens of M. bennettii from the Brazilian Cerrado resemble phenetically more with M. cozumelae than the M. bennettii from Atlantic Forest. Characters presently used...

Geometric morphometric analysis of skull morphology reveals loss of phylogenetic signal at the generic level in extant lagomorphs (Mammalia: Lagomorpha) Naturalis
Deyan Ge, D.; Yao, L.; Xia, L.; Zhang, Z.; Yang, Q..
The intergeneric phylogeny of Lagomorpha had been controversial for a long time before a robust phylogeny was reconstructed based on seven nuclear and mitochondrial DNA sequences. However, skull morphology of several endemic genera remained poorly understood. The morphology of supraorbital processes in Lagomorpha is normally used as a diagnostic characteristic in taxonomy, but whether shape change of this structure parallels its genetic divergence has not been investigated. In this study, we conducted a comparative analysis of the skull morphology of all 12 extant genera using geometric morphometrics. These results indicated that no significant phylogenetic signal is observed in the shape change of the dorsal and ventral views of the cranium as well as in...

Hind Limb Sensory Innervation in Rats: Comparison between Sural and Saphenous Nerve Morphometry International Journal of Morphology
Neri,Letícia Oliveira; de Amorim,Milena Menezes; Campos,Stella Andrade Rodrigues; Sanada,Luciana Sayuri; Fazan,Valéria Paula Sassoli.
Although numerous studies investigate sensory recovery of the hind paw of the rat after nerve damage, still no comprehensive overview of its normal innervation is present in the literature. We investigated the morphometry of myelinated fibers in the sural and saphenous nerves and analyzed their size distributions in young rats. Six 30-day-old female Wistar rats were perfused with 2.5% glutaraldehyde and their right and left sural and saphenous nerves were prepared for light microscopy and morphometry. Morphometric data were compared between segments (proximal versus distal) and sides (right versus left) for the same nerves. Also, segments from right or left sides were compared between nerves (sural versus saphenous). Both, the sural and saphenous nerves,...

Histomorphological and quantitative immunohistochemical changes in the rat pancreas during aging Biocell
Riccillo,F.L.; Bracamonte,M.I.; Cónsole,G.M.; Gómez Dumm,C.L.A..
Although the endocrine pancreas is the purpose of several deep investigations, morphological data referred to the effect of aging on the gland are not homogeneous. The purpose of the current work was to analyze the changes occurring in the pancreas of aged rats, with especial reference to the islet cell populations. Six young (Y), old (O) and senescent (S) male Sprague-Dawley rats were used. The pancreas tails were processed for light microscopy and studied by means of routine stains as well as by immunohistochemical identification of insulin-, glucagon-, somatostatin-, and pancreatic polypeptide- secreting cells (Dako Envision System, DAB as chromogen). A progressive pancreatic histoarchitecture distortion was found among the aged animals. Even when the...

Histomorphometric analysis of the response of rat skeletal muscle to swimming, immobilization and rehabilitation BJMBR
Nascimento,C.C.F.; Padula,N.; Milani,J.G.P.O.; Shimano,A.C.; Martinez,E.Z.; Mattiello-Sverzut,A.C..
The objective of the present study was to determine to what extent, if any, swimming training applied before immobilization in a cast interferes with the rehabilitation process in rat muscles. Female Wistar rats, mean weight 260.52 ± 16.26 g, were divided into 4 groups of 6 rats each: control, 6 weeks under baseline conditions; trained, swimming training for 6 weeks; trained-immobilized, swimming training for 6 weeks and then immobilized for 1 week; trained-immobilized-rehabilitated, swimming training for 6 weeks, immobilized for 1 week and then remobilized with swimming for 2 weeks. The animals were then sacrificed and the soleus and tibialis anterior muscles were dissected, frozen in liquid nitrogen and processed histochemically (H&E and mATPase)....

Histopathological and Histometrical Assessment of Boron Exposure Effects on Mouse Spermatogenesis International Journal of Morphology
Bustos-Obregon,E; Carvallo,M; Hartley-Belmar,R; Sarabia,L; Ponce,C.
Boron is a chemical element widely used in many industrial activities. Exposure to it affects many organs in mammals, mainly reproductive male organs. This work evaluates boron effect in testis. For this purpose, 12mg Boron/L of drinking water, equivalent to Arica tap water, was given for 42 days to 85 days old CFl male mice (experimental group). Another group (control group) drunk tap water of Santiago (0.6mg Boron/L) was used. Testicular histopathology and morphometric analysis was done. These studies showed that Borum induces alterations such as epithelial vacuolization, blockage of the tubular lumen and atrophy. Morphometrical data showed that Borom induces also enlargement of tubular diameter, epithelial height and tubular lumen. Therefore, it is...
